Description: Liotard
exhibited remarkable skill in the difficult medium
of pastels, which he preferred when creating portraits
of children. Surfaces, textures, and volume are
described with subtle gradations of color. At
the time he was working on this picture, portraits
of children were becoming very popular in Western
Europe.
