Notes from Visual Resources Association, Greater New York Chapter Fall Meeting 2010
Friday, October 15, 2010
ARTstor, New York, New York.
- Jenni Rodda called the meeting to order at 3:35pm. Jenni thanked Dustin Wees and Lisa Gavell for hosting the meeting, Billy Kwan for acting as election teller, and Natalie Milbrodt for making the day’s presentation.
- Jenni reported that the membership of VRA/NY has stabilized and urged members to volunteer to serve in the chapter—a Vice Chair must be elected every year. She also reminded attendees that renewal forms were available at the meeting and that they should be returned to Barbara Treitel with payment by check.
- Jenni read the Secretary/Treasurer’s report prepared by Barbara Treitel, who was absent. “Our Citibank savings account balance as of Sep. 19 th is $1,650.32. We have 31 paid members for 2010, up from 24 at about the same time last year".
- The Chapter voted to donate $400 to the VRA/ARLIS joint conference next spring in support of one of the receptions in Minneapolis on a motion made by Johanna Bauman and seconded by Dustin Wees.
- Johanna Bauman reported on the VRA/CAA Affiliated Society Session, “Beyond the Slideshow: Teaching the History of Art and Material Culture in the Age of New Media,” to be held at the Hilton in New York on Thursday, February 10, 2011, 12:30pm-2pm. A business meeting will be held from 5:30pm to 7pm on the same day and in the same space.
- After lively discussion, the chapter decided not to participate in the centralized membership renewal/bursary protocols developed by VRA national (no vote was held as no motion was made). Jenni reminded members to renew their memberships for 2011, and that current memberships expire December 31, 2010. Lorraine Gerrety has volunteered to spearhead a membership initiative; Jenni asked that anyone wishing to work with Lorraine contact her directly.
- Jenni pointed out that we're long overdue for a by-laws review and suggested new officers to form a by-laws review committee.
- The assembled members voted to suspend Article VII:A in order to elect a Vice Chair at this meeting, and then cast paper ballots to elect a new Vice Chair. On the ballot were Claire Dienes of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Cindy Wolff of Pratt Institute. 15 ballots were cast. Billy Kwan acted as teller for the election. Claire carried the vote. It should be noted that in accordance with our current by-laws, nominations for Vice Chair should be made at the Chapter meeting in February.
- The members agreed by consensus to hold a business meeting during CAA in February, and then to go on a field trip at another time in the spring, in lieu of a combined business meeting/program on one day.
- Jenni welcomed Ching-Jung Chen and Claire Dienes as the new Chair and Vice Chair of the Chapter.
- Eileen Krest announced her retirement from Queens College.
- Jenni moved to adjourn the meeting at 4:05pm. A fascinating presentation by Natalie Milbrodt, Queen’s College graduate student and first recipient of the VRA Foundation Professional Development Award, followed the meeting.
