Announcement: CCO Training Workshop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, October 27, 2006
Posted on behalf of Billy Kwan
VRA/NY and the Image Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art are co-organizing a CCO (Cataloging Cultural Objects) training workshop for VRA/NY members and Met staff. Given the fact that the CCO publication was launched at ALA recently and a number of visual resources centers and museums (including the Met) are undergoing major digital image initiatives, Johanna Bauman and I think it is a good time to organize such a training workshop at the chapter level. We are also very glad that CCO editors Elisa Lanzi and Ann Whiteside and CCO trainer Margaret Webster will make themselves available for the workshop.
The details of the program are outlined below:
- Date and Time: October 27, 2006, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (The Image Library of the Met will sponsor a continental breakfast from 9:30-10:00 a.m. A lunch hour will be scheduled from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Lunch will be on your own, and we recommend the Museum’s cafeteria because the schedule will be tight.)
- Venue: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dillon Boardroom and Bass Room (Directions and details will be provided to attendees at a later date.)
- Brief description of the seminar: Full-day training session, with hands-on exercises and small-group discussions. As there will be only one computer and Internet connection in each of the rooms, exercises and discussions will be supplemented with handouts and worksheets. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own cataloging questions with images of works of art to the seminar. We will, however, ask that these be submitted to Johanna or me by October 13th.
- Registration fee and process: There is no registration fee for the program. The seminar will be limited to a maximum of 25 VRA/NY attendees. According to the CCO editors, it is important that the numbers be kept fairly low in such training situations in order for them to be effective. If you are interested in attending the seminar, please send an email to billy.kwan@metmuseum.org by August 4th. In your email, please include your name and contact information and let us know if and when you have already attended a CCO boot camp event at VRA, ARLIS, or ALA. Priority will be given to those members who have never attended a CCO training session before. We will, of course, keep a waiting list for any cancellations and ask for attendance confirmation two weeks beforehand.
It is our goal to make this an interesting and productive workshop. The Museum will remain open until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, so it might be nice to spend the evening at the Met afterward.
Please contact either me (Billy.Kwan@metmuseum.org) or Johanna (bauman@bgc.bard.edu) if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Billy
