Greater New York Chapter Meeting, Monday, 24 April 2006 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The business meeting was chaired by Jenni Rodda, outgoing Chairperson, and Sherman Clarke, incoming Chairperson. We were welcomed to the Met by Andy Gessner, Chief Librarian of the Image Library.

Jenni first called for a report on the website from Eric Wolf who is in charge of posting documents. Don Beetham continues in charge of the member directory so that addresses can be masked. The website address is http://www.vraweb.org/organization/chapters/greaternewyork/members.html.

Jenni and Sherman are the co-listowners of the electronic discussion list that is hosted at http://forums.nyu.edu.

Andy reported on the Chapter’s travel awards, which were presented to Trudy Jacoby (conference registration), Polly Giragosian (workshop registration), and Barbara Treitel (general travel expenses). Polly will give a report at our next chapter meeting on the CCO workshop she attended at the Baltimore conference.

Sherman opened discussion on the revised version of the bylaws that had been emailed to the list. One outstanding issue was the division of the offices of secretary and treasurer that was not written into this revision. The task of minute taking may be delegated though the Secretary/Treasurer will continue to be a single officer. A motion to approve the revised bylaws (Kowalik moved, Wees seconded) was passed. The revised bylaws will now be sent by the Chairperson to the Executive Board of VRA for approval. [Eric has posted them on the website with a note about formal approval.]

Barbara gave a treasurer’s report: 39 members, $1019.72 in the bank, with $560 spent on the travel awards and $50 on the website design. She noted that this is the highest paid membership in recent memory. Jenni encouraged members present to bring guests to our fall meeting, as a way of encouraging new membership in the Chapter.

Jenni presented the slate of new officers: Johanna Bauman has agreed to stand for Vice-Chairperson/Chairperson Elect, and Barbara has agreed to stand for another 2-year term as Secretary/Treasurer. The slate was approved (Gessner moved, Wolf seconded).

Sherman chaired the rest of the meeting. Billy Kwan presented a proposal for a workshop on Cataloguing cultural objects, to be co-sponsored by the chapter. The CCO editors have agreed to teach the workshop and CCO funding will support their travel costs. The Met will provide the handouts, and approximately 15 of the seats will be reserved for the Met. The editors propose running parallel sessions so that approximately 40 registrations are possible. Strong interest was expressed and the chapter agreed to co-sponsor the workshop (Kowalik moved, Treitel seconded). October 27th has been proposed as the workshop date and Friday is the preferred day. Details will follow. The workshop is also a step in the “train the trainer” efforts of CCO.

We will also hold a fall meeting. Don Beetham has invited the chapter to come to Rutgers. There was general interest in meeting in New Brunswick. The officers will work with Don on timing and arrangements.

Before the business meeting, we were given a tour of the “Hatshepsut: from Queen to Pharoah” show in the Met’s special exhibition galleries and a few of us visited the installation of photographs by Anthony Scibilia at the Institute of Fine Arts. Our tourguide at the Met was Phyllis Saretta.
