Brief discussions by Kevin Ford, VR Professional, about programming the Rutgers database to import/export Core 4.0 compatible XML coding and Chad Mills, RU Libraries Systems, about converting the revised database into Luna Insight.
There will be time for questions to Don, Kevin and Chad.
There will be a break for lunch at 1:00; there are a variety of restaurants in New Brunswick. The Visual Resources Collection, Art Library and Zimmerli Museum of Art will be open for visits in the afternoon.
Voorhees Hall is a short walk from the New Brunswick train station on the Northeast Corridor. Parking passes can be obtained from Don Beetham but route 18 in New Brunswick is under construction. Please let Don know your starting point and route, he may be able to suggest alternate routes for consideration.

Abstract
A common
problem shared among many visual resource collections is the inability to
meet the enormous demand for digital images. At the same time, the rigorous metadata
standards of our profession are increasing the amount of time it takes to catalog an image. The only way to address both
these seemingly mutually exclusive tasks is to talk less, and do more, about the sharing of metadata. With that thought
in mind, and with the technical expertise temporarily at hand, the Rutgers University, Department of Art
History Visual Resources Collection and RU Libraries Systems Department set off to transform our Core 3.0 compliant
database to a Core 4.0 compatible database with XML import-export in the three month window we had to do it. Don
Beetham, Department of Art History, will discuss upgrading the MS Access database to meet the new Core 4.0 elements
and standards. Kevin Ford, Department of Art History, will highlight the issues programming the database to
import/export XML data. Chad Mills, RU Libraries, will
cover the implementation of the new database structure in Luna
Insight.
XML Examples Note that these examples are arbitrarily chosen examples and are typical of records in the database. There has been no attempt to upgrade these records to reflect "best" cataloging standards.
