Wednesday, June 11, 2008
ARTstor, New York, New York
In Attendance : Johanna Bauman (Chair), Billy Kwan (Vice Chair), Barbara Treitel (Secretary/Treasurer), John Blakinger, Sherman Clarke, Barbara Elam, Kristine Heid-Santiago, Carol Lekarew, James Mitchell, Maria Oldal, Jenni Rodda, Carey Weber, Dustin Wees
- Welcome and introduction (Johanna Bauman of ARTstor): 4:00 p.m.
- Treasurer's & membership reports (Barbara Treitel of Jewish Museum):
- Balance of $1,472.31 in interest bearing savings account.
- $250 sponsorship to the VRA 26th annual conference in San Diego.
- $50 sponsorship to the spring reception of the New York Technical Services Librarians at New York Public Library.
- 37 paid members for 2008.
- Membership of the VRA/NY listserv:
- There was a discussion over whether the membership of the VRA/NY listserv should be restricted to current paid VRA/NY members. Currently, the list includes many former paid/active members and VRA officers.
- The decision was made that we will keep the status quo of the listserv, but attendees to VRA/NY programs/events should be encouraged to join the association.
- Travel award:
- No travel award was granted to VRA/NY members for the VRA Annual Conference in San Diego because there was no applicant.
- The main reason was that most of the VRA/NY members who attended the VRA Annual Conference were fully funded by their institutions for their travel.
- The Travel Award Committee will be formed at our next meeting to solicit and review applicants for the grant in 2009.
- Elections:
- Per the chaper Bylaws, Billy Kwan will become the Chairperson for the coming year.
- Sarah Goldstein volunteered to run for the office of Vice-Chairperson. Although she was absent at the meeting, her nomination and election were unanimously accepted.
- Barbara Treitel volunteered to continue her term as Secretary/Treasurer.
- Report and presentation on the “Seeking the Right Path for Visual Resources Users” workshop at VRA annual conference (Billy Kwan of the Met)
- Next meeting & program:
- Jenni suggested digital image preservation as the topic for our next program.
- NYU may have the expertise and the venue for the tentative program.
- Billy and Sarah will work with Jenni and Sherman on the logistics.
- Discussion on social tagging (moderated by Johanna): 5:00 p.m.
- A few ARLIS/NY members were also invited to the discussion.
- Unfortunately, our guest speaker, Clay Shirky, was not able to join us at the last minute. Johanna led the discussion by giving an overview of the two fundamental approaches of social tagging—collaborative vs. collective. Flickr and del.icio.us are the examples of these two approaches respectively.
- Johanna also outlined the three major principles for a successful social tagging environment.
- The group also reviewed/discussed a variety of social tagging tools, such as PennTags, Library of Congress’ photograph collection on Flickr, Steve.museum Social Tagging Project, and a few bibliographic systems allowing user-provided tagging.
- Adjournment and reception:
- The Meeting was adjourned at about 6 p.m. It was followed by a wonderful wine and cheese reception on the “Metadata Terrace” at ARTstor.
