Rosemont College

Minutes:

Joan Beaudoin convened the meeting by reporting that both she and Rachel Beckwith had served beyond the terms of their appointments as Chair and Secretary/Treasurer, respectively. She opened a discussion about what we could do to avoid the problem of not being able to recruit new chapter officers in the future. (Joan is happy to continue to serve as Chair, but is concerned for the future of the chapter. Rachel will be moving to Boston in June, so will not be able to serve as Secretary any longer). Some suggestions included changing the bylaws or changing the terms of the officers' appointments. After some discussion, it was agreed to stagger the terms so that the Chair is elected on odd years and the Secretary on even years. It was decided that we would have a list of names in alphabetical order so that if no one volunteered to serve, we would choose a name from the list and keep rotating through the list of official members. The group voted to institute these changes, and all members present at the meeting were in favor. Joan will continue to serve out this term as Chair, until October. The group will need a Secretary; if no one volunteers to serve, then we will begin using the rotating list of names.

Heather Glaser gave a brief account of the general meeting of all of the Chapters at the national VRA conference. She said that the declining membership of the group was discussed, among other topics.

Next the group turned to hear Abby Goodrum, Assistant Professor of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University, present a talk about retrieval of visual images. Abby talked about how everything that we do to retrieve images is text-based. Text-based approaches, such as keywords, authors, and titles, have been used since the first lantern slide collection came into existence in the 1880s. Abby discussed the 'aboutness' of an image versus the 'of-ness.' She said there are lots of inter-indexing consistency problems in studies of image indexing. Recently, there are more and more content-based image retrieval systems being developed, including QBIC (Query by Image Content). These content-based retrieval systems often have problems with precision. Another solution is to combine text and image retrieval systems. Abby shared several of the projects she is working on with the group, including a project with the National Library of Medicine images. Some group discussion followed Abby's presentation.

Joan thanked everyone for coming and concluded the meeting.
