Great Lakes Regional Chapter Spring Meeting
April 10, 2003, Warwick Hotel, Houston Texas
In attendance: Chair, Joseph Romano; Treasurer, Astrid R. Otey; Secretary, Jean Koeller; Dane A. Johnson, Laura M. Ponikvar, Keenan R. Tunnell, and Yan Zhou
Joseph Romano, made welcome remarks with an introduction by everyone in membership.
Two meetings were discussed and planned. Joseph Romano will host our fall meeting at Oberlin College, Friday October 24, 2003. Details will be posted and sent out when we get closer to that date. Before the meeting, Laura Paris offered to host a meeting in 2004 at Ohio University.
Treasurer's Report was given by Astrid Otey, we have the total of $608.16 in our account.
A discussion ensued concerning should we keep dues low. Old business concerning the use of dues for travel expenses as incentive to attend regional meetings was addressed. Several felt that the money wasn¹t the issue, but time, location and where the meeting fell in the academic calendar determined attendance. Everyone agreed that Fridays were the best day and to keep the meeting one day. October seemed like a good month.
Membership, a discussion about our low membership numbers ensued. We have 13 members that consist of 9 renewals and 4 new. Laura Paris agreed to take the membership log that Jean Koeller compiled in 2002 and update it. We will then send another letter to potential members and we all agreed to give a call to a few who are missing. At that time we will also survey our exiting members as well as the people who are not members to get a sense of what people are doing digitally. This information can then be used for meeting material.
Web page suggestions were made. Joseph Romano is going to continue to update the site. We are going to add job postings, internships and other links for our area, specifically timely items.
Meeting began at 3:00 pm and adjourned at 3:30 pm so that the Chair could attend a meeting of regional chapter officers.
