VRA Great Lakes Chapter Meeting Minutes and Summary

October 22, 2004, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio

Ohio

In attendance: Joseph Romano, Astrid Otey, Lesley Chapman, Jean Koeller, Sue Morris, Carole Pawloski, Cathi Judy, Gail Kennedy, Ann Silver, Suzanne Buchanan, Yan Zhou, Alex Nichols, Patricia Robinow, Derek Churchill

Hosted by: Laura Paris

Tour: The meeting began at 11:00AM with a self-guided campus tour of works from Ohio's Percent for Art program. Established in 1990, the program, in an attempt to foster culture and the arts, requires that at least 1 percent of state appropriations for public building projects be used for art. Artists represented on the Ohio University campus include Jenny Holzer, Mary Mark, Uta Barth, Lois Gruberger, Barbara Grygutis, Deborah Butterfield, Siah Armajani, Alice Aycock, and Maya Lin. A good time was had by all those who were able to take the tour, and chapter members returned to Seigfred Hall and broke into small groups for lunch, reconvening for the Fall business meeting at 1:30PM.

Business Meeting: Chair Joseph Romano was detained due to illness, so Laura Paris stepped in with welcoming remarks.

Treasurer's Report: Astrid Otey presented the following report: The chapter has received $60 income in dues since March. There have been no expenditures; our current balance stands at $688.16.

Spring Meeting: Members present decided to continue with the chapter's tradition of meeting at the national VRA conference, this year to be held at the Wyndham Resort Hotel in Miami, Florida, March 6-10, 2005. The specific day and time will be announced at a later date.

Managing a Digitization Workshop: Jean Koeller reported on her attendance of this workshop and distributed copies of the clear and self-explanatory workshop handouts created by Trudy Levy and Howard Brainen, both leaders in digital imaging. Jean and Sue Morris also described the positive experience they had with the "Basics and Beyond" digitization course offered by the Illinois Digitization Institute at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library. The group discussed the numerous resources available to us as we all struggle to make the transition to digital. The VRA website has links to numerous digitization resources, the SEI Institute will be offered again this summer, as will the Urbana-Champaign workshop. The VRA listserv and Great Lakes Chapter listserv are also excellent resources.

Membership renewals: Lesley Chapman distributed 2005 membership forms to members in attendance. Members will also be able to renew online within the next month.

The business meeting adjourned at approximately 2:10PM.

Demonstrations: Laura Paris then demonstrated the workflow of scanning and editing digital images in her collection, and after a brief break, demonstrated MDID and ARTstor as they have been implemented on her campus. The group had a number of questions and comments about both products; a lively discussion ensued, and everyone went home with new information to incorporate into his/her own digital collection development process.

Many thanks to Laura Paris for all of her hard work in preparing a wonderful packet and presentations, and meeting. Kudos!
