VRA Great Lakes/ARLIS Ohio Valley Joint Meeting

9:00 am. Everyone in attendance arrived at Miami University, Room 130 Art Bldg. for coffee and pastries sponsored by the VRA chapter. We got Acquainted, signed up for lunch and gathered our maps and information.
9:30 Astrid Otey gave us a tour of the Art Department
10:00 Astrid Otey gave us a demonstration of EmbARK and how her collection has used digital and text entries for her collection. Discussions Included webs access and image size.
10:30 Dr. Robert Benson gave a tour of Alumni Hall and the architecture building. He gave us the history of the building and its expansion through the years of growth, pointing out the inventive use of space and accommodations for studios for the students and faculty.
11:00 Shannon Van Kirk, director of the Art & Architecture Library, showed us her facility and how she has handled her periodicals and issues of demand and technological information. She showed us her special collections rooms and discussed how access for her users is the most important issue. We all fell in love with the large display box for the oversize Helmet Newton book of stars.
11:30 Dr. Robert Benson, chair of the Architecture Department, took on the topic of "Technology in the classroom". We had a demonstration of how he has organized his class topics, studypages and images to create fascinating and engaging digital presentations. He discussed ideas about how to think and work with this medium. Dr. Benson was very generous with his information about software and the support that it took to get to the level of expertise that he has obtained. He fielded questions about how the faculty has embraced this technology and what type of audience we are serving. A discussion and demonstration of the document camera was also made available.
12:30 Arrangements were made for lunch at the Alexander House restaurant and it was very good.
2:00 We headed over to the Miami University's Museum and its current exhibitions. Bonnie Mason introduced us to: Ana England: Of This Earth, a site-specific installation and Craft is a Verb, works from the American Craft Museum.
3:00 Business meetings for the two chapters were conducted and a tea was arranged by the University of Dayton, Visual Arts Department, with a special thanks to Chair, Fred Niles.
