Mid-Atlantic Chapter Meeting
VRA 27th Annual Conference
Sheraton City Centre
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Wednesday, March 18 2009
Chair: Macie Hall
Secretary-Treasurer: Steve Tataum
Attendees: Ann Burns, Bob Willis, Kathe Albrecht, Christina (Tina) Updike, Elizabeth M. Gushee, Pam Hawkes, Gerri Schaad.
The meeting was called to order. The minutes of the fall meeting were approved. The treasurer reported a balance of $738.15. Dues were collected.
Additional financial matters:
- There was discussion of the progress of the bursary and bundling plans for the collection of national and chapter dues. The plan is expected to go ahead in the fall.
- Chapter funds will no longer to be used for coffee breaks at the national conference. They should be spent for the local chapters instead, such as for educational offerings or speakers.
Plans for the next chapter meeting:
- Ideas for workshops or speakers were solicited. Professional development offerings might allow institutions to fund people who don’t usually come to the chapter meetings.
- The discussion settled on new media, such as wikis, blogs, twitter, and Facebook—what are they and how can they be used to relate to different constituencies.
- Tina Updike mentioned that Marianne Chappell and Sarah Cheverton could lead workshops at James Madison.
- Kathy Albrecht said there are also people at American University who could lead workshops, so we should consider a good location.
- The Newseum was mentioned as possibility at the last meeting. The Newseum does not have a meeting space on site, but we could do tour there. We could have a workshop at American University then go to the Newseum.
- We could involve ARLIS, but we might not to meet with ARLIS this year.
- May 29, June 19, and June 26 were selected as the best dates.
- Decisions about the time, place, and workshop leaders were left open for now, with Tina Updike and Kathe Albrecht to make arrangements later.
Announcements:
- There is an invitation from the Southeast Chapter for Mid-Atlantic members to attend their meeting or perhaps have a joint meeting—Raleigh June 5 and 6. The timing was too close to our meeting time and Raleigh is a long a drive for everyone in our chapter. We will not have our chapter meeting at the same time in case anyone wants to go.
- SECAC will be in Mobile October 21-24. There will be a VR session on space issues around the transition from analog to digital—an update on a session at San Diego.
- The SEI location for 2010 has not been decided. It might be held two years in one place to improve logistics. Sherman Clarke leads an advisor group. ARLIS and the VRA board decide.
Thanks to Macie Hall for assuming the chapter chair.
Meeting adjourned.
A recording of the meeting is in the electronic archive.
