VRA Mid-Atlantic Chapter & ARLIS-NA DC, Maryland, Virginia Chapter

Visual Resources Association Joint Chapter Meeting
Friday, October 20, 2006
Nimitz Library, United States Naval Academy,
Annapolis, MD

Attendees:

Meghan Gross, Johns Hopkins University, Visual Resources Collection
Macie Hall, Johns Hopkins University, Information Technology
Missy Lemke, National Gallery of Art, Photo Archives
Florence Thorpe, Maryland Institute College of Art, Media Library
Ann Woodward, Johns Hopkins University, Visual Resources Collection

Business Meeting:

1) Treasurer’s Report – The checking account balance is $763.13. We have 20 dues paying members for 2006.

2) Nominations were sought from the floor for Chapter Chair for the 2007-2009 term. Macie Hall nominated Liz Gushee from the University of Virginia.

3) Discussion of Chapter contribution to the VRA National Conference:

In the past we have donated ~$200 to the conference, which goes towards general conference operations. Ann suggested the establishment of a chapter travel award, but the application and review process may make this unworkable because we would need a sub-committee within the chapter.

Ann asked if we could piggyback on the other Travel Awards. Macie thought that this was not possible because there are different categories/criteria for those awards. Meghan suggested sponsoring a coffee hour, but our budget would not support this. We then focused on underwriting a workshop or educational opportunity for the chapter.
We will solicit ideas from the chapter for the workshop or educational program, i.e. scanning, monitor/projector color calibration, copyright, processes and workflow for going digital.

4) Ann suggested creating a chapter reading and discussion group.

5) Discussion of upcoming chapter meeting topics with the goal of depleting the treasury:

a. Kansas City – no program, short business meeting
b. Summer 2007
c. Fall 2007

6) Websites:

The VRA website and VRA logo will be changing. All chapter and committee websites will be hosted by the VRA through its current hosting service (Hostways), streamlined, and updated by web designers.

Chapter website. Chapter chairs were contacted about using a VRA-designed template for Chapterwebsites. Each chapter website will require certain information, and additions are possible. One required component missing from our current website is a roster. Meghan thought that some members would not want their names listed on the website, but perhaps we can list institutions represented in the chapter.

7) Meghan reminded the attendees about chapter dues and elections. Only dues paying members are eligible to vote.

Meeting adjourned at 10:45am.
