Business Meeting
- Treasurer's report by Andree Le Bourveau: $700.00 balance in VRA/NC account; 2004 membership: 23 members, with 8 new members; $140.00 raised from the Spring 2004 UCSC workshop led by Trudy Levy and Howard Brainen.
- Travel Award: the Chapter will match the $140.00 raised in the spring workshop, and contribute an extra $20.00, for a total award of $300.00. The award should be used to assist a member with fees and travel expenses to the national conference. Corey Schultz, Karen Kessel, and Trudy Levy will set up the application form and criteria for applicants. There was a discussion on how much money to keep in the account: Giovanna Jackson suggested $300-400, T. Levy suggested $500. Corey Schultz proposed a $300 travel award for the 2005 conference, the motion was seconded, and there was unanimous approval.
- Marika Wolfe won’t be attending the 2005 conference, and will donate her free workshop to Andree Le Bourveau, who will report on the workshop at the Spring 2005 meeting. About half to the people attending the meeting will be going to the conference in next March.
- There was a discussion on the Summer Institute at Duke University, which used to be called “Slide Camp” at the University of Texas in Austin. The VRA listserve will send out a call for registration. Last year it filled up in 2-3 days. Approximately 50 students attended, with another 50 on the waiting list. Jason Miller attended last year, and said that it was very intense; classes ran from 8 am to 6 pm, and covered the entire spectrum of digital imaging, from sourcing images, databases, copyright, presentation tools, etc. Jason said that they were all “burned out” at the end, but the instructors were “fantastic”.
- Discussed whether VRA National would give money for a joint meeting. ARLIS National gives money to chapters for joint meetings. ARLIS/NC is currently planning a joint meeting with ARLIS/SC. Trudy Levy said a joint meeting/workshop might be presented to the Education Committee. For example, VRA could have a workshop with the Museums & Computing Networks (MCN), focusing on the strength of each group, technology for MCN, and cataloging for VRA. Leah Theis, who is on the Education Committee, called for suggestions; Two chapters could work on this: UC San Diego, site of the Slide Summit, is a good place to hold a workshop.
- The 2005 ARLIS National conference will be held in April in Houston. Howard Brainen will give an all day session; Corey Schultz will be moderating several panels. ARLIS will be doing a lot of VR programming.
- A nominating committee needs to be created, to select candidates for the new slate of officers: Vice Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. Andree Le Bourveau described the Treasurer job, which involves collecting dues, handling the membership & sending the list to ARLIS for the joint membership list. Nina Hagiwara talked about the Secretary job, mainly taking notes, writing them up, and re-reading them at the following meeting. The description in the by-laws needs to be changed to reflect the current duties. Previously, the Secretary handled membership, but it makes more sense for the Treasurer to keep track of this, when the checks are deposited. Corey Schultz, Andree Le Bourveau, and Jan Eklund volunteered to be on the nominating committee. The estimated date for a vote will be in mid-January. Maryly nominated Howard Brainen for Vice Chair. Karen Kessel nominated Kathleen Hardin for Treasurer. Corey will post nominees on the listserv, and asked everyone to send him names.
- Trudy Levy described her idea for an “Image is Everything” poster featuring a dragon. The final image could be made into posters and cards, and used to raise money.
