2003 Annual Report

Accomplishments:
The spring meeting was held at the Chinese Historical Society of America in San Francisco on May 2nd, 2003. Summaries of workshops and seminars from the 2003 VRA Conference in Houston were given: "What does it take to create a digital image collection?" by Trudy Levy; "Native American Cataloging Resources" and "Influencing Skills for Positive Outcomes" by Karen Kessel; and "Creating IP Guidelines for Visual Resources Collections" by Corey Schultz.
At this meeting, VRA-NoCal created an Outreach Committee to increase chapter membership. Focus areas were divided among the members and included areas such as students in library and art history departments and people working with images in the private sector.
The Chapter had made a previous commitment to hold joint conferences with other interested organizations, such as ARLIS and MCN. On December 12th, 2003, we held a joint meeting with ARLIS-NC at the University of California, Berkeley. There were 63 attendees, including 26 current or potential VRA members. We had three speakers involved in digitization projects at UCB: Mary Elings of UCB Bancroft Library spoke on "Digital Library Building Blocks: An Update"; Robin Chandler of the California Digital Library gave a presentation entitled "California Digital Library Image Service Project"; and Jason Baker of the Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archives demonstrated the "BAM/PFA Digital Asset Management Database." During the meeting, we created a Bylaw Review Committee to review and edit the current bylaws and resubmit them to VRA for approval. To facilitate this, Trudy Levy created a web form whereby members could read the bylaws and vote online.
The next VRA chapter meeting is tentatively scheduled for May 2004 in Santa Cruz and will include summaries of VRA 2004 sessions and workshops.
The Chapter has pledged $50 for the 2004 VRA conference in Portland. Approximately ten VRA NoCal members will be attending the national conference, and we plan on holding a casual chapter meeting while there. Some members are also contributing items to a VRA NoCal basket to be auctioned at the raffle.
Goals:
- Work to increase membership by continuing our outreach to students (in the fields of Library Studies and Art History), as well as members of related organizations (e.g. SAA, ARLIS, MCN)
- Continue holding joint meetings with ARLIS-NC and MCN-CA.
- Add workshops to our chapter meetings to increase attendance.
- Market VRA NoCal meetings as opportunities for career development.
- Create a travel award to assist members to attend the annual VRA conference
- Plan a joint VRA-NC and VRA-SC meeting.
- Research the possibilities of using PayPal to renew memberships online
Board Action Requested:
The Board might consider "bundling" VRA National memberships to include local chapter memberships as well. Many people are interested in joining VRA-NoCal; when they discover that they must also be members of VRA National, however, they believe that membership costs are too expensive and do not join.
