Our home base for the 2018 conference will the the Loews Hotel in the historic PSFS (Philadelphia Savings Funds Society) building designed by Philadelphia architects William Howe and George Lescaze in 1932 as the first International Style skyscraper in the United States.  You will have some fantastic views of the city from this bank building turned hotel.  In the lobby you’ll find they serve La Colombe coffee (heaven in a cup), but across the street are a Dunkin’ Donuts and a Starbucks as well.

Kitty corner from the entrance is the historic Reading Terminal.  Once the Philadelphia station for the Reading Railroad, it now plays home to restaurants, the Philadelphia Convention Center, and ground level, the Reading Terminal Market.  The Reading Railroad agreed to make the ground level of their station a market when the original market occupants refused to relocate.  Though the station is no longer receiving trains, the Reading Terminal Market will be celebrating is 125th Anniversary, so be sure to visit at least once to sample the baked goods, deli’s, Pennsylvania Dutch fare, and more.

To the west of the hotel is City Hall and to the west is the Gallery or Market East.  One of the first “urban malls,” Market East helped to maintain Center City retail at a time when stores were running for the suburbs. Market East is currently being redeveloped as “Fashion District Philadelphia.”  More shopping can be found to the west on Market Street and to the sound on  Chestnut, and Walnut Streets.
