ARLIS/NA - VRA Joint Task Force on Professional Standards Criteria

The charge of this Task Force is to develop in conjunction with the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) an updated revision of the professional standards document titled “Criteria for the Hiring and Retention of Visual Resources Professionals” (originally adopted 1995; revised 2002).

The Task Force will begin by investigating current practices and trends, taking into account recent research and statistical information as well as anecdotal evidence. The 2009 VRA White Paper and the 2007 VRA Professional Status Survey, along with similar documents and related research, will provide useful summaries of current conditions and practices. In preparing its statement, the Criteria Task Force should strive to balance administrative, library, and visual resources perspectives.

The Criteria will be addressed to various constituencies, including administrators and faculty as well as library and visual resources professionals. It should acknowledge the development of many different administrative models, combinations of duties, and relationships with other reporting areas within an organization. It should clearly and concisely articulate standards in areas such as educational qualifications and background experience, position titles and status, opportunities for advancement and professional development, appropriate levels of staffing and support commensurate with performance standards and expectations, and regular performance review, providing strong supporting rationale and evidence for each point.

In its final approved form the Criteria will appear as a downloadable document on the ARLIS/NA and VRA web sites, on the College Art Association web site, and on the web sites of affiliated organizations.
