Design was chosen by competition. The chosen design was influenced by the Greek Parthenon. Built into the design are symbols of the Union like the 36 exterior Doric columns representing the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death.
Inscribed above the statue: IN THIS TEMPLE / AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE / FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION / THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN / IS ENSHRINED FOREVER; [the northern wall contains an inscription of Lincoln's second inaugural speech, the southern wall contains an inscription of the Gettysburg address]
